LEVITATION VILLA 01

LEVITATION VILLA

RESIDENCE / MARKOPOULO
PROPOSAL

MIKE KRAOUNAKIS

KOSTAS PALIOGIANNIS

This house is designed for a family of four and consists of two volumes: a square one on the ground floor on which rests a long rectangular one that protrudes from it, giving the impression that it hovers. Due to the plot’s inverted slope, the upper level’s linear volume extension towards the road, brings it almost to the same level. This “T-shaped” volume composition mentioned above, takes full advantage of the orientation, embracing the favourable Greek Southern sun.

The natural environment connects with the residence on all its levels. On the ground floor, the border between the inside and outside is not clear with the yard being in direct contact with the living room and dining room. Upstairs, the house’s bedrooms are arranged linearly and expand at the ground floor’s ceiling slab, thus creating a second courtyard on a higher level.

Both the shape of the volumes and their construction materials as well reflect the functions they enclose. Thus, the ground floor, on which the top floor is essentially based, is solid and serves as a solid base being made of raw concrete and stone, while at the same time, with the use of large glazing, permeability and connection to the outside space is achieved. The top floor on the other hand, due to the bedrooms’ need for more privacy, is more compact, with selected openings in the respective places. Finally, the top floor’s extension to the road, comprises of a guest house that uses an independent entrance.

HOTEL SUITE / EXHIBITION
PROPOSAL

Honeymoon travelling is one of the major sectors of tourism. In this perspective, it is obvious that it applies to all types pf hotels, such as a summer or winter resort as well as a city hotel, giving the honeymoon couple the opportunity to literally select amongst any destination for this journey.

K-division’s concept is based on designing a hybrid layout, thus applicable on any hotel type, combining all the facilities a newlywed couple could wish for, with all the functionality and luxury hoteliers would look for.

Based on the above, k-division’s proposal consists of three layouts, all variations of one basic plan, that can adjust to the needs and the climate conditions of the above-mentioned hotel types.

Thus, the separating wall between the living room and the bedroom in the summer resort, becomes a double-sided fireplace, both in the winter resort and city hotel.

Respectively, the summer suite’s pool becomes a water surface in the winter suite, with a matching transformation of the outdoor layout. The sheltered outdoor area with the use of a pergola for the necessary shading during summer time, is substituted by a more solid covering formed by the building’s roof, while a closed outdoor space is created with sliding glass doors, where fire and water, compose an absolute contrast.

All the above layouts are supplemented with luxurious furniture, fabrics and materials. The choice of the elements differs in each hotel type, in terms of color and texture, aiming always to create an atmosphere which will contribute to a unique honeymoon experience.

This proposal concerns the remodelling of the facades and complete renovation of the reception and restaurant areas of the main building as well as the outdoor areas and swimming pool of the Hydra Beach Hotel complex in order to transform into a modern tourist accommodation, providing the necessary amenities to the modern traveller.

Regarding the building’s facades, with respect to the initial architectural design of a widely recognized architectural office, targeted interventions were made in order to maintain the original excellent design, while acquiring at the same time a modern and fresh character. In the welcome area, the reception was redesigned by choosing modern furniture and applying new clean-cut materials while the restaurant was designed from scratch, maintaining the different levels, while introducing new textures and restoring the exposed concrete look of the original design.

On the main building’s outdoor areas and specifically on the back facade, due to the need to create an outdoor covered siting area and swimming pool, a large metal structure was designed based on the principles of modernism, conceptually and literally expanding the interior living areas. This construction, through its sliding glass walls, provides the visitor with the possibility of direct contact with the element of water, while enjoying the sunset during the afternoon hours.

Finally, smaller interventions were made in the rooms’ corridors in order to meet the design of the main building’s corresponding interventions.

On a plot located in an area of natural beauty and strong north winds, we designed a residence for a family of four. Due to the urban planning constraints and taking into account the plot’s orientation, the house is developed following a gamma-shaped layout, opening to the Southeast while creating a solid boundary to the unfavorable North. The positioning of the house at the northern end of the plot, has been determined to a large extent so as not to interrupt the existing building’s view, located at a higher point of the plot, on the western side.

The building’s strict geometry and shape lightens at the top of the highest volume, appearing to hover as it is set on a glass surface surrounding the first floor’s attic. Aiming to protect the building from strong north winds, we designed a solid facade of exposed concrete with linear slots filled with perforated aluminum sheets, thus contributing to the building’s natural lighting and ventilation.

On the exterior, the metal canopy with wooden finishing integrates and visually extends the interior to the exterior of the building, while at the western boundary of the plot, a swimming pool and a second outdoor seating area is designed. On the west side, a stone wall develops linearly, serving both as a boundary for privacy and axis movement, while entering the building, and creating a soft vs rough effect.

RESIDENCE / KEFALONIA
PROPOSAL

KOSTAS PALIOGIANNIS

In a forest environment of unique beauty, this single floor architect’s residence was designed, overlooking the lagoon of Koutavos in a South orientation, with Argostoli on the background. The plot’s steep slope led to the design of an almost buried house where the ground becomes essentially a planted roof on the building’s eastern part.

The residence consists of two distinct volumes which are connected by a corridor, in a blunt variant of an “L-shaped” composition, thus separating the building’s different functions providing at the same time the corresponding privacy. In the first volume, the transparency of which creates an unobstructed continuity of the interior and exterior as well as an unobstructed view, are the living spaces. The second volume has a different design approach as it includes the more private areas of the bedrooms with their bathrooms in a linear development, having a South-East orientation.

The clean-cut design, the raw materials and the layout’s simplicity, create a harmonious whole between the building and its surrounding space. Thus, the residence is constructed from exposed concrete accompanied by white metal pergolas while the planted roof, in addition to its ecological characteristics, creates the feeling of a visual continuity from the upper level’s entrance.

In the area of Arkitsa, on a seaside plot with North orientation, we were assigned to redesign an existing building and transform it into a modern holiday house for a family of four and their friends.

Working within an intensely narrow layout, our primary goal was the functional unification of the building’s all three levels using a central staircase that would play a primary role in the whole design. The second important goal was to give the new building as much as sea-view possible through large windows and sliding doors and finally, to modify its form to such an extent that it acquires dynamism and a modern character. Our most important intervention in this direction was the conversion of the double-pitched roof into a single-pitched one, an element which required complex construction methods.

The entrance to the house is from the South into the middle level while the lowest level was strategically chosen – due to its contact with the outdoor space – as the “heart” of the house, as in this space the owners would spend most of their time.

The white colour of the thermal facade’s plaster is combined with the aluminium frames’ silver coloured anodizing in a game of forms under the intense light and shadows of the Greek sun.

KOSTAS PALIOGIANNIS

Gallery Blue Hotel consists of 72 rooms and 22 suites, with a total capacity of 320 beds, in a 35-acre beachfront located at the eastern end of Kefalonia and surrounded by wild, dense vegetation.

The complex develops mainly on the East-West axis, as the plot in the South is adjacent to the provincial road Poros – Skala while in the North it reaches the sea. In total, the complex consists of two reception buildings, the East and West, thus providing the possibility of partial operation, depending on the period of the year and availability as well.

The rooms are organized in groups, composing a settlement of small building volumes, which, depending on their location and orientation, delimit plateaus, paths and stops, while, on the contrary, the suites are developed linearly, parallel to the plot’s elevation curves, and consist of two-level autonomous buildings, which are in direct contact with the natural environment.

The aim of this study is to create an innovative resort, consisting of smaller individual complexes, as well as private homes, thus providing the visitor with the possibility of complete isolation.

The design is based on simple and modern forms which enhance the plot’s unique view, providing quality architecture of high standards with respect to the very special landscape of Kefalonia. Designing based on bioclimatic architecture, we achieve a fairly high level of sustainability, through energy saving and low costs within a very unique building environment. Many of the buildings seem as an extension of the landscape itself, an element which is reinforced by the use of local materials, such as the stone walls acquired by the excavation process.

PROPOSAL

This duplex is designed for two families of four and is composed of a single volume. Essentially, the building is comprised of two “L” shaped compositions, which are designed in such a way that they intertwine with each other in a vertical layout. This volume composition takes full advantage of the plot’s permitted design space while creating a very interesting shape which uses the voids and fills for the benefit of the respective uses of the individual spaces. The entire building is based on a pilotis where the duplex’s main entrance is located.

The two houses are organized in a similar way but with an opposite vertical layout, deployed on two levels, with the living spaces in one and bedrooms in the other. This volume entanglement creates alcoves and protrusions which, in combination with the use of large openings, take full advantage of the view and orientation.

Both the use of white plaster colour of the building and anthracite coloured metal structures, create a strong contrast, while projecting the building’s dynamism, which is also enhanced by the linear forms of its balconies. Finally, in selected parts of the building, passive shading systems have been designed to protect large glass surfaces from Greece’s intense sunshine during the summer months.

Situated in Karaiskaki square, one of the busiest spots of the center of Athens, one can find the Corner Café, on the ground floor of the “Stanley Hotel”. Our design’s main intention was to create a modern take away café, which would reflect the old Athens’ architecture materiality, while adding a pleasant touch of green to the urban landscape of the Athenian center.

The corner facade of the building, which has been strategically chosen for the location of the café, is coated with two surfaces that serve as frames, thus composing a solid volume, which adheres superficially to the transparent frame of the ground floor.

The large slabs of Arabescato marble as well as concrete effect that have been used in the facade, create a very interesting contrast, while harmoniously conversing with a more pop-style interior along with the colors of mint and puce which dominate the café’s interior, emphasizing this way in its modern style.

Finally, from the top of these frames, hang various artificial ivies, adding a fresher style to the entire design, while pleasantly predisposing the visitor to taste the different fresh products this café has to offer.
