VARKIZA RESORT

VARKIZA RESORT
COMPLETED 2024

The redesign of Varkiza Resort – one of the most popular and frequented coastal zones of Attica-, draws elements from mid-century modern architecture while inspired by the existing prefabricated curved forms found throughout the complex, aiming to create an atmosphere of effortless elegance, tranquility, and natural harmony. Following the various orthogonal grids of modernism, the central design idea is built around recurring curved forms, both horizontally and vertically, thus establishing a coherent architectural vocabulary. The interventions are applied as “secondary skins” to the existing building typologies, granting them a new identity through soft, organic volumes that blend smoothly into the natural landscape.

The new main entrance, defined by imposing arched forms, is conceived as an experiential gateway and primary point of reference. A VIP entrance zone is also envisaged, with a strong identity based on the repetition of arches, defining a luxurious reception space. In a similar spirit, the new F&B area unfolds beneath an impressive pergola made of natural materials and organic lines, sheltering various food trucks while creating a dynamic open space for social gathering.

The existing cabanas as well as the W.C. facilities are redesigned in the same architectural language, while pathways to and from these structures are emphasized through the repeated use of arched typologies throughout the complex.

Material selection follows an earthy and subtle palette: natural-colored plaster for exterior shells and sand-toned cement mortar for interior spaces, while bamboo elements are used for shading and fencing. This interplay of textures and forms enhances the spatial experience, exuding calmness and a sense of summer luxury, with the materials engaging in a dialogue along with the curved forms and natural setting through a play of light and shadow.

The landscape redesign through targeted interventions, pathways and planting schemes, along with the overall discreet yet dynamic lighting approach, enhances the summery atmosphere of the complex, by adding a sense of naturalness and comfort, without disrupting the continuity of the landscape.
